started in 2003, the schaefer portrait challenge is a triennial call to hawai'i artists to capture hawai'i's people. each challenge continues to capture our essence, marking us in time, and documenting our evolution.
this year, the result is 59 pieces of art with a wide variety of subjects and mediums. each piece is visually captivating as well as technically impressive. walking through the exhibit, the talent of the final artists is obvious as their subjects come to life. it is a humbling collection of of both fine artists and astonishing people.
this year's winner, jonathan yukio clark, created a stunningly beautiful portrait of his grandmother that no words can do justice. this piece alone is worth the trip to the MACC to behold the exhibit. his mixed-media portrait is acrylic on wood, flanked by beautiful obi from kimono.
